About the Deer Isle map
Deer Isle, created by John McLane, is one of the largest and best-known community maps in DayZ. At roughly 16 by 16 km (about 256 square kilometers) and inspired by Deer Isle in Maine, it is built around a dense central island ringed by smaller islands, harbors, a snowy northern peak, deep forests and dozens of detailed settlements. Distance, routing and boats matter far more here than on a compact map.
Beyond normal looting, Deer Isle is an exploration and questline map. Coastal towns like Stonington offer early survival gear; Devil's Eye and Paris Island are military targets; and the real endgame runs through the Barringer Crater (an NBC toxic zone), Alcatraz, the KMUC underground bunker at Mt. Katahdin, the Jungle Temple, the Arctic Crypt, the Oil Rigs and the Aircraft Carrier - tied together by keycards, the S.T.A.G. sample and diving gear.
Use this interactive Deer Isle map to plan routes, scout the airfield and military areas, and find diving and boat routes between the islands. Search for items like Purple Keycard, NBC suit, Diving Gear or Air Tank, toggle marker and loot layers, and measure distances with the ruler. Exact spawns vary by server, but the map shows the likely vanilla locations.
Key locations on Deer Isle
A huge island packed with custom content — keycard bunkers, offshore rigs and two big cities. Click a place to jump straight to it on the map.
The island prison where the questline begins: the Purple Keycard is most commonly found here, usually on desks. It is the card that opens the purple door deep inside the KMUC bunker, so this is your first stop before the dungeon run.
The map's signature underground "dungeon" beneath Mt. Katahdin and the heart of the questline. Open it with the Purple Keycard — the door takes a while and then stays open for about 90 minutes — and the entrance is now a camper-unfriendly labyrinth. Inside, head to the helicopter crash in the large central pit for the skull staff, and keep your keycard: you need it again at the very end.
Strongpoint platforms out at sea (Deepwater, Horizon, Rogue Wave). They are a prime source of keycards — often found on top of the water towers — plus strong military loot. You usually need a boat and good timing to raid them.
A scatter of small islands off the west coast with their own loot and another keycard source. Quiet and out of the way, but the open-water approach leaves you exposed.
A key questline waypoint: the Blood Sacrifice teleport that carries you to the temple. It only works at night, with the statue fires lit, and while you are bleeding. Bring the skull staff and X65 smoky grenade with you each time you cross.
The traditional spawn for diving tanks, which the questline needs for the underwater section of the temple. Grab a tank here and refill it before you head to the Swamp teleport (server settings can vary, so check nearby coast too).
The island's military airfield in the north — hangars, control tower and barracks make it a strong mid-to-high tier loot stop and a regular PvP hotspot.
Three fortified strongpoint camps spread across the island (Camp Bear, Camp Eagle, Camp Wolf). Reliable military loot away from the keycard bunkers — and frequent contested zones.
The large southern city: dense residential, commercial and industrial loot, hospitals and a natural staging point for the southern coast and the rigs.
The big northern city with its own harbour, industrial zone and suburbs. A good gear-up hub for the north of the island and the inland route toward KMUC.
Deer Isle's unique systems
Keycards & locked dungeons
Colour-coded keycards unlock the island's underground bunkers, where the best loot hides. The Purple Keycard (found at Alcatraz, often on desks) opens the purple door deep in the KMUC bunker. The Green Keycard sits in the Arctic temple on the far north-east island — reached by boat — and opens a Carrier ship full of high-tier loot (optional, not needed for the questline). Cards are consumed on use, and the bunker door is slow to open with a loud alarm, so find your card first and plan the run.
The questline
Deer Isle 6.0 has a complete, multi-step quest. From your Stonington spawn, gear up with a weapon and an NBC suit and reach Alcatraz (a boat helps the whole quest) for the Purple Keycard. Detour to the Barringer Crater for the X65 smoky grenade (NBC required), then open KMUC and take the skull staff from the helicopter crash in the central pit — keep the keycard, you need it again. Grab a diving tank (Swans Island), then use the Blood Sacrifice teleport in the swamp — at night, while bleeding — to reach the temple for the Stag punch card (underwater) and Thor's hammer (head + handle). Craft a bear ghillie, sail to the Arctic Temple to ignite the skull staff (its green keycard opens an optional weapons carrier), then teleport from the Temple of the Gods' cauldron to the endgame bunker — unlocked with the Purple Keycard and the Stag punch card. A long, gear-heavy, team-friendly chain.
Barringer Crater & the X65 sample
In the far south-east, the Barringer Crater is filled with toxic gas and the undead. At the top of the tower in the middle sits the X65 smoky grenade — a key questline item used later to trigger the temple teleports — so bring a full NBC suit (gas mask and filters) before you climb in.

Where to loot on Deer Isle
- Best loot: the keycard bunkers (KMUC) and the offshore oil rigs.
- Keycards: oil-rig water towers, the Archipelago, and desks in special buildings (Purple at Alcatraz).
- Civilian gear, food & medical: the big cities (Portland, Stonington) and the KP towns across the island.
- Search the map for an item to see where its loot zones overlap on Deer Isle.
Survival & route tips
- Find a keycard before you commit to a bunker — and bring a gas mask and filters for the bunkers and the crater.
- The KMUC door is slow and then stays open about 90 minutes, and the entrance is a labyrinth — go with a team and hold onto your keycard, the quest needs it again later.
- It is a big island — plan vehicle and boat routes, and use the distance ruler above for long crossings.
- Try diving for underwater stashes and wrecks — a low-traffic way to find gear.

Deer Isle DayZ map guide and FAQ
What does this DayZ Deer Isle map show?
This interactive Deer Isle map shows one of DayZ’s largest community terrains, including Stonington, Devil’s Eye, Paris Island, Crater, Alcatraz, KMUC, Mt. Katahdin, Arctic Island, Aircraft Carrier, Oil Rigs, Jungle Temple and hidden caves or bunkers.
How large is the Deer Isle map in DayZ?
Deer Isle is roughly 16 x 16 kilometres, or about 256 km2. Because it is packed with islands, coastlines, mountains, forests, water routes, bunkers and underground areas, it often feels even larger than the raw size suggests.
Why is the Deer Isle map popular?
Deer Isle is popular because it mixes classic DayZ survival with a huge exploration-focused terrain, tiered loot progression, boats, diving gear, toxic zones, Alcatraz and KMUC-style endgame areas, and a long questline.
What are the most important places on Deer Isle?
Important Deer Isle locations include Stonington, Devil’s Eye, Paris Island, Power Plant, Mine, Crater, North Haven, Archipelago, Portland, S.T.A.G. Island, Area 42, Alcatraz, KMUC, Mt. Katahdin, Arctic Island, Aircraft Carrier, Crypt, Jungle Temple and the Oil Rigs.
Can I use this map for Deer Isle servers?
Yes. You can plan routes on vanilla+, hardcore, PvP, PvE, trader or custom questline Deer Isle servers. Exact loot and keycard spawns can change per server, but the map gives a strong base for searching.
How do coordinates help on Deer Isle?
Coordinates help share meeting points, base spots, oil rig routes, KMUC entrances, Crater positions or Aircraft Carrier routes. Deer Isle is large and island-based, so exact coordinates are especially useful.
How does the Deer Isle tier map and loot progression work?
Many Deer Isle servers use tiered loot progression: southern spawn areas usually offer weaker loot, central and western zones can provide stronger military or industrial gear, and remote northern endgame areas can hold rarer high-tier loot. Server settings may differ.
How do I find items and vanilla spawn points on Deer Isle?
Use the Deer Isle item search on this page: type Purple Keycard, Green Keycard, NBC Jacket, Gas Mask, Filter, Diving Gear, Air Tank, Compressor, Boat Engine, S.T.A.G. gear or Mjolnir. The map shows possible vanilla spawn points and loot zones.
Where is KMUC and why does it matter on Deer Isle?
KMUC, the Katahdin Military Underground Complex, is the huge underground bunker around Mt. Katahdin. It is one of Deer Isle’s best-known endgame areas, with strong loot, long tunnels, PvP risk and questline-related items.
Where can I find Purple Keycards or Green Keycards?
Keycard spawns can vary by server. Community guides often mention Alcatraz, Oil Rigs, Archipelago or watertower locations for Purple Keycards, while Green Keycards are tied more to later Arctic/Crypt or Aircraft Carrier progression. The item search can show baseline possible spawn locations.
Why is the Crater dangerous on Deer Isle?
The Crater, or Barringer Crater, can be a toxic zone, so entering without a full NBC suit, gas mask and enough filters is not recommended. It also matters for the questline because S.T.A.G. research samples or X65-style items can be connected to it.
Why do I need Diving Gear, Air Tanks and boats on Deer Isle?
Deer Isle has many islands, oil rigs and underwater or coastal points, so boats, boat engines, marine oil, spark plugs, diving gear, air tanks and compressors can be essential for reaching remote islands, underwater loot and endgame routes.
What is the Deer Isle questline about?
The Deer Isle questline can connect keycards, the Crater, KMUC, Skull Staff, S.T.A.G. samples, Jungle Temple, Mjolnir parts, Arctic Crypt, Green Keycard and Aircraft Carrier. Exact steps can vary by server, so the map and item search help with orientation.
