About the Bitterroot map
Bitterroot is one of the first DayZ maps set in the United States - a fictional region of Montana built by Mattty-Ice- and the Bitterroot team. Across roughly 155 square kilometers of dense pine forest, steep mountain valleys, rivers and isolated backwoods towns, it trades the post-Soviet feel of the official maps for an authentic American wilderness, heavily inspired by Far Cry 5, The Division and The Last of Us.
The terrain pushes a slower, more tactical survival style: resources are spread out, elevation and forest make navigation harder, and long cross-country travel is genuinely risky. The map packs 3 major cities, 38 towns, 11 campgrounds, 3 airports and 19 military locations, plus its own lore - before the outbreak the region was gripped by a dangerous cult, the Children of Man, whose two cult sites are among the map's most distinctive points of interest.
Bitterroot also ships a lot of custom content: an American weapons overhaul (around 25 new firearms, with several vanilla DayZ guns removed), custom buildings, clothing and food, custom infected, and three new animals - Mountain Lions, Moose and Black Bears. Use this interactive Bitterroot map to plan routes between settlements like Haven and the Bishop Air Station, scout military zones and cult locations, toggle loot-tier and usage zones, search for any item by name, and measure distances with the built-in ruler.
Key locations on Bitterroot
A 155 km² stretch of Montana wilderness: three cities, airports, mountain military zones, a fortified survivor settlement and the cult's compound. Click a place to jump straight to it on the map.
The map's largest city and main loot hub — dense residential, commercial and industrial blocks plus medical buildings. As the biggest settlement it draws heavy player traffic, so clear it in sections and watch the rooftops.
A northern city with its own residential and commercial loot and a sports stadium. A solid gear-up hub for the north-west of the map and a staging point toward the International Airport.
An eastern city with a church, a ruined high-rise and mixed urban loot. It anchors the centre-east of the map and makes a good base for the eastern military zones and Bishop Air Station.
The map's largest airport in the north — terminal, hangars, radar and a control tower inside a big military area. It is one of the top-tier loot runs and a reliable PvP hotspot, so approach from cover.
A military airfield in the south and one of the map's signature high-tier locations. Hangars and barracks make it a prime source of weapons and armour — and, like every airfield here, a magnet for fights.
What makes Bitterroot different
The Children of Man cult
Before the outbreak the region was gripped by a dangerous cult, the Children of Man. Their two cult sites — including Faith's Gate Compound — anchor the map's lore, and cult-themed crash sites are scattered through the forests. It is the map's Far Cry 5-style backbone of atmosphere and story.
American wilderness survival
Bitterroot trades the post-Soviet feel of the official maps for authentic Montana backwoods. Dense pine forest, steep mountain valleys and rivers spread resources out and make elevation and line-of-sight matter — long cross-country travel is slow and genuinely risky, so plan routes and vehicles.
New wildlife: mountain lions, moose & bears
The mod adds three new animals — Mountain Lions, Moose and Black Bears. They make the forests genuinely dangerous and a hunting opportunity at once: predators can ambush a lone survivor, while moose and bear are big sources of meat, fat and hides if you can take them safely.
American weapons overhaul
Bitterroot ships its own roughly 25-gun American weapons set alongside custom buildings, clothing and infected. Expect US-style rifles, hunting weapons and civilian guns to fit the Montana theme, so the loot economy feels distinct from vanilla DayZ.
Where to loot on Bitterroot
- Best loot: the International Airport, Bishop Air Station and the mountain military zones.
- Civilian gear, food & medical: the cities (Jackson Falls, Broken Arrow, Lakeland) and the larger towns.
- Hunting & wilderness gear: campgrounds, cabins and the forests — and hunt moose and bear for meat and hides.
- Search the map for an item to highlight where its loot zones overlap on Bitterroot.
Survival & route tips
- It is a big, forested map with real elevation — plan vehicle routes and use the distance ruler above for long crossings.
- Watch the treeline: Mountain Lions, Moose and Black Bears can kill a careless lone survivor in the woods.
- The airports and mountain military zones hold the best gear but draw the most fights — scout before you push in.
- Explore the lore: the Children of Man cult sites and cult crash sites are atmospheric and worth a careful look.
