The bunker puzzle, step by step
Follow these in order. The first four steps get you inside; the last four are the water puzzle that unlocks the deeper floors and the best loot.
The vanilla Chernarus bunker is one of the best loot runs in DayZ, but it hides behind a punch-card door and a water-level puzzle that traps most players on the upper floors. This step-by-step guide takes you from finding a punch card all the way down to the third and deepest floor, where the rarest gear sits. The water puzzle is the real gate: you raise and lower the flood with valves to expose ladders, and reaching the bottom safely is far easier with a teammate.
Follow these in order. The first four steps get you inside; the last four are the water puzzle that unlocks the deeper floors and the best loot.
Before you go anywhere near the bunker you need a punch card. This is the key item that opens the entrance, and it can be found scattered around the map as loot. Pick one up and keep it in your inventory.
The good news is that a punch card is reusable - it does not break after a single use, so one card can open the door again on future trips. The trade-off is that it works slowly: expect the panel to take a while to register and open, so do not panic if nothing happens immediately.
Head to the northern town of Palana on Chernarus. Once you are in town, find the gas station and use it as your landmark, then follow the road heading west out of town. This is the same road the military tent sits on, so you are on the right track once you see it.
This road is long, so pack plenty of food and water before you set out - running it dry is the most common reason people give up halfway. Keep moving west and watch the right-hand side, because before long a dirt road branches off to the right.
When the dirt road splits, do not follow it straight ahead - that path leads only to the bunker’s exit, not its entrance. Instead, take the route down to the right, which brings you to the military base. The actual entrance is here at the base.
Look behind the ruined building, near two military barracks. The entrance is the card panel set into the structure there. If the door is already open when you arrive, treat it as a warning sign: another player has very likely been inside recently and could still be around.
Use your punch card on the entrance panel. It will take a while to open, so be patient. Once it does, head in - but be aware this entrance is a notorious camping spot, because as soon as the door opens an enemy can see straight inside. Check your corners before committing.
The very first door you reach inside does not open. Instead of forcing it, go around through the side route, open that door, and pass through the smaller doorway beyond it. From there it is a straight shot into the bunker proper, and you arrive on the first floor.
The bunker has several floors, and the deeper you go the more there are. Many doors are permanently blocked, so do not waste time on them. On the first floor your initial loot comes from a couple of open rooms - an open garage area and a workshop, plus a small barrack and a room full of storage boxes.
One working door takes you upstairs to the living quarters and showers, where staircases run both up and down. Both staircases at any junction lead to the same place, so it does not matter which side you pick. Note that one staircase stops at the top while the other keeps going - the one that continues leads to the upper living quarters and eventually to the bunker’s separate exit and tower.
The important takeaway: the upper floors are a maze of repeating rooms, but the real prize is below. Head back to the second O1-style room near the start, where another door leads downward into the water room.
Follow the downward door near the start into the water room - this is the heart of the bunker puzzle. Off to the left there is a small office room and a couple of side rooms worth a quick look, but the room itself is what matters.
In here you will find valves you can turn. These control the water level for the whole lower section: turning them raises or lowers the flood that blocks the ladders down to the deeper floors. The entire puzzle is about managing this water level to expose the ladder you need while not flooding yourself out.
Turn the valve to empty the water. The system is buggy - it often will not drain while you are looking directly at it, and it may appear to refill before it actually empties. If it seems stuck, just turn the valve and leave it for a minute; it will eventually drain fully.
Once the water is gone, approach the now-exposed ladder and climb down to reach the lower floor. Be quick, because the water can rise again on its own; if it floods too high you will be locked out of the descent. On the second floor you will find a small medical area at the end, but much of this level is a dead end with more blocked-off staircases.
The third and deepest floor holds the best loot in the bunker, precisely because it is the hardest to reach. The catch: the ladder down to it is broken, so the only way to get up and down safely is to raise the water and swim. This is where a teammate becomes essential - one of you works the valve while the other rides the water level.
Have your teammate turn the red valve to slowly raise the water. As it rises you float up toward the ledge; once it reaches the platform you can swim across, grab the ladder, and climb to the floor you need. Do not try to shortcut by jumping down from the third-floor ledge - there is no safe drop, and you will break your leg.
To leave, reverse the process: have your teammate raise the water again so you can swim up and out, then empty it one last time, get on the ladder, slide all the way down, and head back up the stairs to the exit. With a partner on the valve the whole puzzle becomes a smooth in-and-out; solo, the deepest floor is effectively a trap.
A punch card. It is found as loot scattered around the map, it is reusable, and you use it on the card panel at the bunker entrance. The panel opens slowly, so be patient.
At a military base near Palana. From the Palana gas station, follow the road west, then take the dirt road down to the right to the military base. The entrance is behind the ruined building near two barracks - not the path that leads straight ahead, which is only the exit.
Valves in the water room raise and lower the flood that covers the ladders. You drain the water to climb down exposed ladders, and raise it to swim up where a ladder is broken. The system is buggy, so give it a minute if it seems stuck.
You can reach the upper and second floors solo, but the third floor is extremely difficult alone because its ladder is broken and you need someone on the valve to raise the water while you swim. Bring a teammate for the deepest floor.
You almost certainly jumped down from a ledge instead of using the water. There is no safe drop to the deeper floors - always raise the water with the valves and swim or climb instead of jumping.
